NMC forms a national task force to examine medical students’ mental health concerns.

As per the statement released by NMC on February 21st – A national task force was established by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to investigate the causes of rising mental health problems and suicides among medical students.

Dr. B M Suresh, a professor at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS Department of Psychiatry, will head the 15-member task force.

The task force intends to visit colleges where suicides have been reported to gather more in-depth information. Their primary goal will be to research the literature and data currently available on medical students’ mental health and suicide rates to analyse the causes of these problems and develop evidence-based plans to improve mental health and stop suicides.

By May 31st 2024, the task force intends to submit a thorough report outlining its main conclusions and making practical suggestions for improving the mental health resources offered to medical students.

The task force is dedicated to calling regular sessions, in person or remotely, as needed to carry out its objective and to give regular updates to the anti-ragging cell on its progress.
